Call for Scores

New Voices Opera is calling for scores for its Fall 2020 Exhibition (NVO X). Submission criteria and guidelines are given below. Every effort will be made to give all submissions a public performance at the Exhibition, though virtual performances may be considered dependent on the status of the COVID-19 pandemic. This means if there is an abundance of submissions, cuts will be made in order to stay within our time limit (either interior or entire submissions). We request that a brief (one paragraph) Letter of Intent be submitted by August 24, 2020, including a short description of your idea and your interest in the exhibition.

Score submissions are due with a hard deadline on Wednesday, September 30, 2020. If you are able to submit your score early, please do! The more time singers have to look at the works, the better represented your composition will be. Singers will be selected by audition. If you have a preference of who you would like to sing a role, please encourage them to audition.

We will accept both scenes from operas in progress as well as individual songs. Previous experience writing for the operatic medium is not required. As per Opera America, opera is defined as a music-theater experience with a dramatic arc written for voice or voices accompanied by instruments. All composers will be considered for selection for a 2023 staged opera production. As a result, preference will be given to those composers submitting scenes. Letter of intent and score submissions can be sent via e-mail to newvoicesopera@gmail.com with an digital copy of the score and an mp3 recording (MIDI is acceptable). The subject line should include your name and "X Submission". Please note that we reserve the right not to select a score for the 2023 production if the jury feels there is not a qualified submission.
